Repetition - Exam
Why I choose Repetition?
When i had to choose my response to one of the 7 themes (LandMarks, Outline, Reflections, Diary, Repetition, Clothing and Groups ) Through the process of looking through each topic, i looked at all artists within each topic, i looked at there work and i tried to get inspiration from each topic; then i went on to Pinterest to look for some ideas. The topic which stood out to me, including the artist's and the actual work and how many different unique ideas i got for it, i choose Repetition after looking at Maurizio Galimberti and Peter De Lory. I thought there work was very inspirational to me, which also gave me a wide range of ideas to add and import into my own work.
What is Repetition?
"the action of repeating something that has already been said or written"
"the recurrence of an action or event"

My Plan for Repetition
Maurizio GalimbertiMaurizo Galimberti is a amazing photographer and i like the style which he expresses it, "his obsession for the Polaroid camera was due to the camera for the simple reason that he could not stand waiting for the process before viewing the result of his shoot and also because he was always afraid of the dark in the darkroom" i can relate to the dark room as i find it hard, however i want to overcome that. I like the he turns a simple image into 100 small different segments. However i want to take some ideas but the aspect of using 100 small images takes to long for one image even though its part of the same image. However i want to research more about him so i can make similar images like his, but in my own and unique way.
How i am going to find out how to make images like this: -More research -Trying to figure it out on Photoshop -testing out collage websites and taking a range of images (30-40) which have to be the same in some way. |
Peter De LoryPeter de lory uses his advantage of his scenery around him, for example the nature and lake scenery. i like they way he takes image which still come into the category of repetition, however he uses other techniques like blur and darkness, which causes a more distinctive image. I like the way the snow splits the contrast in to two parts in the image. I want to try recreate something like this, however in a light environment; which will give off a shadow like the one on the image but not reflected by the water.
My ideas for this example is to go to a country side destination and to take photos that have a repetitive pattern with some form of reflection with it. However this is going to be a challenge as i will have to find more than one place to take images of this type of style as i want a range of about 5 images for my final piece. |
Etienne-Jules Marey
Etienne-Jules Marey was a widely considered to be a pioneer of photography and was influenced by the history of cinema, also in graphical techniques. He used the movement of people and animals to demonstrate his response to repetition. His work was used with a camera which only produced images in black and white as digital cameras weren't around in the 1830-1904. I want to demonstrate a sort of response to his work for example people doing sportive activities, but i might but them in to a black and white effect and i might make a range of images like this but in a variety of different techniques on Photoshop.

My First Experiment
This was my first example and first response to repetition. When i started the exam this was my first thought. I like this image as a whole but i don't think its imaginative enough. I think i could of made this better by keeping them all in one separate image, However i have looked on Pinterest for some more ideas and how to improve and i want to take more images around school to do with repetition, but make them dark and mysterious to give more of a meaning and cause an effect. My main goal is to include all my ideas into two final pieces with a variety of 3 images per piece. The thing i like the most about this image is the way the light contrasts on the toy car next to it to give a gloomy effect.

My Third ExperimentThese are a set of images in response to task of repetition, i took these images in school but i mainly just took photos of walls and stairs as i was stuck on other ideas i could proceed in school. After taking this photo i tried to think of someone who would give me a indication of creating my own images with a style which i wanted to carry on and improve my work with. I realized that the image i took were very similar to each so i was wondering if i could give them a black and white effect or other effect
Repeating one of my experiments |
My Four ExperimentThese are my first set of images responding to 'Repetition' There are a few images here which i want to improve on for example (Under the links and the stairs) i want to go back retake this images but with less light or reduce the brightness in Photoshop and also take the image at a different angle. However i like the rest as they are a good start for my first attempt, i like the way in some images they feature a lot of repetition for example the one with lights because you have the repeated line of lights, also you have the lockers below and the ledge to the right of the lights. However the next step i want to take is nature ( trees and plants) as i want to make as many attempts of repetition featuring different kind of features until i am happy enough for it to be a final or one of them, because i want my final piece to be brilliant and to look professional, so when i get to the final piece i will be proud of it.
Repeating some of my experiments |
I used PicMonkey to overlap this image with the same image four times and then faded it so you could see the repeated image more than once. I think this image looks very mystique and absurd through the rough corners and everything is very unorganized but i really like that about this image
What i use to edit these photos
This is the tool i mainly use to edit most of my images, I use the blend tool to blend multiple images together to make a absurd effect but also gives off a lot of lines and shapes which repeat themselves throughout the image. Then i use the blend mode to change the color of the blend to a darker or lighter blend or different sort of textures for example rocky and watery, which i didn't use as i felt the default tools fulfill the purpose i want to create good images. PicMonkey is a internet bases website which i found through reviews from artists, giving good reviews on the work which i was interested in looking into. I mainly use this website

My Five Experiment
I took this image through the Easter Holidays in Oxley's wood, i purposely went out to take a range of images. I took this image 4-5 times to try get the background blurred, so the leaves were the main focus of the image, also i thought it was very repetitive and i liked the overlay of the leaves. However i want to change the contrast and the lighting of this image so i can have a selection of the same image but in different styles (Black and white, Bright colors and also the blur) The things i want to improve is how much coverage the picture has, as i want to take the image again but with less exposure of the background and more leaves, for example i could try and take the leaves all in a row with the background on the edges and hopefully get some shadows around the edges of the leaves.

What i used to edit most of my images on Photoshop
This was based of an idea of repetition with the theme of light and dark in different parts of the image, when i took the original i wasn't impressed with it, i thought this could be a lot better. So i used the tools to make the surroundings dark (The tree and the ground) and in between the trees i made it light, i gives an effect of like Heaven and Hell. what i want to do with this image is to take it maybe in a few more angles, however i might chose something else within this sort of technique for example and range of trees together which are joint at the roots. I really do like the contrast between the image and its also has the rule of thirds which is a triangle which you can make up with three part of the image. My most practical idea is to take the idea of Maurizio Galimberti and put in a 9 by 9 grid or cut the image up in to little pieces like specs of glass. By using scissors and a ruler and laminating it afterwards.

what i most like about this image is how simple and it took about 10 seconds to take. I like they way it looks like a ripple with the bark multiple times which gives a repetitive effect. What i don't like and would like to improve is get the outline of the tree as well but i don't know if it will ruin the image but i am i going to try it out and if i don't like it then i am going to find other ways in trying to improve this image.
What i thought i could do is make one image bright one dark one with different colors like i did in my first example ( the lights in the grid) I Have tried to enlarge the photo and repeat the photo inside the hole 3-4 times but i can't do it on Photoshop to see how it would come out and i felt it ruined the image it looked very unprofessional and pointless it didn't really look repetitive. |
I think this image needs improving in a way that i don't feel that it shows repetition in a very clear way, i guess you have the path and the trees in a line, but it doesn't look layer out properly. I think the colors and the contrast make this image really effective however it doesn't show a good interpretation of repetition. I think i could improve this angle by taking this image at different angles and different ends of this pathway, so you can see the exact parts which make it repetitive. Also i wish i took it with a effect of blur towards the background, also took it with a digital camera so it looked more focused and clear.
However i don't think this is a good example which i want to make my final piece so i want to leave this image as an experimentation and instead of final piece. |
My Sixth Experiment
To create this image, i used a few techniques from different artists (Etienne Jules-Marey) He used his Multi frame per second, but i adapted it into to my own style, i used a Cannon DSLR and took 3 photos of him in different positions, which then i added them all into one image and then flattened the image so it becomes an individual image. What i most like about this image which i try implement in all of my images, i want to make them different and absurd like. However i don't like the background that's my only Negative comment about it, as it looks messy and disjointed.
However i want to leave this as an experiment as i feel like i don't think i could get another position were the contrast and the background while be perfect. |
To create this image, i tried use techniques from Etienne Jules-Marey however again i adapted it to my own style. What i did was i used a Cannon DSLR and used the sport mode effect, which takes multiple images per second, so i could capture all of the movements which he made, however i tried doing what Marey did, but it looked quite blurry and unprofessional. I think i this image worked out quite well considering i am not the best expertise at Photoshop.
What i would of loved to have improved but it didn't fit in the camera frame was maybe move close, but then i wouldn't of been able to capture him running from half way. The images below are all the images which went into that one image that was condensed into one individual image, which you can see on the right hand side. |
My Final Project
These final pieces were so simple for me to do, but so hard for me to think of what to do,i tried experimenting with everything i could possibly think of which ended out working for me until i used things i had done but extended on them throughout my exam, i changed around throughout my exam, i kept changing techniques and skills i was using. My ideas were adapted by Pinterest and just going through artist research and expanding on new ideas. I really like the way the three images go together and how they ended out, i like the way of how the overlap turns the whole image into absurd repetitive image. I also like how i changed the contrast and the color tone, which changed the effect of the image,
